Indications for Holter Recording

Holter monitoring in pets is a valuable tool for assessing heart rhythm over an extended period, from 24h to 14 days. Common indications include:

Evaluation of Arrhythmias

Detecting and assessing the severity and frequency of supraventricular or ventricular tachyarrhythmias and bradyarrhythmias

Monitoring Antiarrhythmic Therapy

Assessing the efficacy of medical treatments for heart rhythm disturbances

Diagnosing Syncope and Pre-syncope

Helping to determine the cause of fainting or near-fainting episodes when heart rhythm disturbances are not evident during a standard ECG

Pedigree Screening

Particularly in breeds prone to cardiomyopathy, such as Doberman Pinschers, Boxers, and GSD older than 3-years to detect markers like ventricular premature contractions

Assessing Pacemaker Function

Evaluating the functional integrity of implanted artificial pacemakers

Evaluation of Ventricular Response in Atrial Fibrillation

Monitoring the ventricular response rate during treatment for atrial fibrillation

Exercise Intolerance

To detect arrhythmias during physical activity

Post-surgical Follow-up

After cardiac procedures to monitor recovery

Holter Reports with Specialist Precision and Immediate Clarity

Our Holter reports stand out for their clarity and ease of reading, each one meticulously analysed and signed by specialists, offering a comprehensive clinical assessment with tailored recommendations, and enhanced by a unique colour‑code system that instantly conveys the urgency of interventions.

The "traffic light code" used by ecg4vets Holter reports is a colour-coded risk rating system designed to rapidly highlight the severity of observed ECG abnormalities, ranging from normal to life-threatening conditions. This system helps clinicians quickly determine the urgency of follow-up care. The specific codes are:

  • Green (Normal/Atypical/Borderline)

    • a normal ECG, an atypical pattern with no specific significance, or findings that meet only minimal criteria with limited prognostic significance. No significant abnormality is observed, or the issue is non-urgent.

  • Amber (Abnormal Rhythm/Abnormal ECG)

    •  a significant abnormality has been observed, such as an abnormal rhythm. These findings suggest the need for discussion with a cardiologist, though typically not as urgent as red alerts.

  • Red (Serious Abnormality)

    • a serious and potentially life-threatening ECG abnormality, such as criteria for a life-threatening arrhythmia or prolonged cardiac pauses. This rating suggests the need for urgent discussion with a cardiologist and/or immediate referral to a hospital.

The system uses a hybrid approach, combining machine learning with expert human clinician review to ensure accuracy in analysis and reporting.
